Wednesday Ratings:  ABC and CBS Both Take Wins

Depending on how you look at it, two networks shared last night’s crown.  CBS may have grabbed the viewers, but ABC had it where it counts: the demos.

  • Despite mixed review, (12.42 million, 4.9/13 share) took the hour’s demos with ease.
  • At 14.55 million, CBS’ (3.9/10) won the night in viewers.
  • (10.28 million, 3.9/10) continued its losing race against Practice.
  • (6.37 million, 3.0/8) was up from last week’s numbers.
  • (1.3/3 share) rounded off the hour with 2.8 million viewers.

10pm

  • (4.1/11 in 18-49, 13.43m) pounded the competitors with 13.43 million viewers.
  • ABC’s (8.64 million, 3.3/9) was down slightly from last week as was (8.1 million, 2.7/8).

Howie Mandel Strikes a Deal

Howie Mandel And it didn’t even involve a call from the mysterious “banker.” Howie Mandel, who seemed to fade from the spotlight in recent years, has made his comeback. And then some. Don’t hate me, but I found his hyper comedy routine with the latex glove blown up on his head funny. Then again, I was 11 years old, so that kind of stuff is funny. So, he’s been doing Deal or No Deal since December 2005 and it’s been big business. Who would have thought that this former funnyman and sometimes dramatic actor (hey, he was good on St. Elsewhere) would rise from the ashes and recreate himself as a game show host? For anyone who watches Deal, you know how truly addictive this show can become. I try to steer clear of it because it immediately pulls me in and doesn’t let go. And I’m not alone. The show averages between 8 and 10 million viewers and airs Wednesdays and Fridays. And now, it’s been given the “deal” for syndication, with a special half-hour version that will air five days a week. Mandel, clearly no dummy, will also host the syndicated version (in addition to the regular primetime deal). No changes to the set or those briefcase models when it goes to a half hour, however, the big prize will be reduced from $1 million to $250,000. Still nothing to scoff at. Go Howie!

‘Pushing Daisies’ Helps ABC Wednesday

Wednesday’s premiere of Pushing Daisies attracted many customers to The Pie Hole.  By night’s end, ABC came out with another win (followed by CBS, NBC, FOX and CW).

  • CBS’ (14.4 million, 3.7/9) took the hour in viewers, but placed 3rd in the demos.
  • (12.3 million, 4.5/11) declined from last week, but still topped that new show on NBC.
  • (10.9 million, 4.0/10) dropped 30% in the demos and lost 19% of its viewers.
  • CW’s (2.8 million, 1.3/3) remained fairly even.

10pm

  • (12.7 million, 3.9/10) maintained last week’s viewership numbers.
  • ABC’s (9.7 million, 3.6/10) lost almost 700,000 viewers but moved up to second place.
  • NBC’s (8.8 million, 3.0/8) lost 13% of its audience causing it to fall into 3rd place.

Despite having a Tivo and another DVR, I know that a new television season can take some serious planning.  When will your favorite shows start?  What days are they now on?  Which programming ‘conflicts’ will you have to resolve?  Will you need to buy another TV???

Switcheroo for ‘Deal’ and ‘Crossing Jordan’

Deal or No Deal Here’s one of those things that totally confuses viewers—moving a show to another day and time. The latest is the switch in days between Deal or No Deal and Crossing Jordan. So, the Wednesday night edition of Deal will move to Sundays, and Crossing Jordan will get the bump to Wednesdays at 9 p.m. The change will make Sundays a bit different, with Grease: You’re the One That I Want at 8:00, Deal or No Deal at 9:00, and The Apprentice at 10:00. Whether or not the move will increase ratings, we’ll just have to see. Jordan will now be in good company with the other Wednesday dramas: Friday Night Lights and Medium. Of course, that also puts Jordan in competition with American Idol, which is currently the ratings king.

1 vs. 100 Gets Full Order

Bob Saget OK, I admit it. I watched 1 vs. 100—and it was pretty entertaining. For anyone who is tired of Deal or No Deal, this just may be the change of pace you need in a game show. With solid ratings, 1 vs. 100 was given the go-ahead by NBC, who ordered 10 additional episodes of the show (they already had 5 on the docket). “1 vs. 100 grabbed the public’s attention when it delivered solid ratings last Friday and staked out its own identity to become a great extension of our game-show franchise.” says Craig Plestis, head of alternative programming at NBC. 1 vs. 100 also brings Bog Saget back in the limelight and he does a fine job as host. If you’re unfamiliar with the premise, this game show puts one player up against a “mob” of 100 others—testing their knowledge of trivia. The individual player wins money for each correct answer as more members of the mob who answer incorrectly are eliminated from the game. The twist here is that if the individual player answers incorrectly, the remaining mob members split his or her earnings. The show premiered last week with almost 12.8 million viewers.

The Odds of Winning Deal or No Deal

Deal or No DealUSA Today has a fun look at the chances of winning Deal or No Deal. If you’ve never seen the show, the contestant must select one briefcase from a total of 26 to remain front and center next to them. The player then must choose briefcase numbers—eliminating dollar amounts from 1 cent to 1 million dollars. The chance of having the winning $1 million briefcase is very slim—3.8%. Picking a case containing the $500,000 amount comes in at 11.5%, while the chance of getting a case with $5,000 or less is 57.7%. The USA Today article further breaks down each round and the chances of cashing out with the big prize. The biggest prize winner so far has been Michele Falco, winning $750,000 on September 22nd.

FOX Adds Primetime Game Show to Roster

Fox Logo Not one to miss out on the game show mania, a la Deal or No Deal (NBC) and upcoming 1 vs. 100 (NBC) and Set for Life (ABC), FOX will now be offering their own primetime game show to the mix. The Rich List will debut later this season, produced by the British company that brought you The Weakest Link (ugh!) and Dog Eat Dog (double ugh!). The show will challenge teams of strangers by having them complete lists of topics, from trivia to textbook topics. To add to the excitement, the teams will wager on how many answers they expect they can provide—highest bid gets to complete the list. And of course, if they don’t make their estimated number, the other team goes on to face another team. According to Mike Darnell, head of alternative programming at FOX, “This is a truly original concept, unlike anything else currently on air, which promises to be exciting and addictive viewing.” Don’t expect any famous American talent to host the show, as British morning show host Eamonn Holmes will helm The Rich List.
